PRAY & OBEY (part two)

“But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord” (Jonah 1:3).

“I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, and He answered me” (Jonah 2:2).

Thanks for praying and fasting with us this Wednesday, January 5.

ACTION WITHOUT PRAYER IS ARROGANCE.

BUT, PRAYER WITHOUT ACTION IS HYPOCRICY.

Because Jonah prayed, God gave him another chance to obey. He was spit out of the fish. He was delivered from his trial. But that was not the end. God’s heart for people affected him. And he went to Nineveh and warned them of their sin. As a result, God’s plan to forgive them was realized.

It is not enough to just pray. We must also obey the guidance of God that comes through prayer. To ignore God’s instructions is hypocrisy. The Pharisees liked to be heard for their long prayers, but they didn’t obey God. This amounted to dead religion.

This Wednesday we will pray and fast again. Let’s be sure to pray first, but then to obey what God lays on our hearts, even if our flesh may resist it. Let’s see new victory. Let’s pray and obey.

Let’s pray for ourselves

Dear Lord,

Please forgive us for not acting on what You speak to us. Your word is so very clear that faith without works is dead. Help us to act immediately on what You speak to our hearts. Help us discern Your voice through the Bible, wise counsel, and prayer. Let 2011 be a year of great fruitfulness through our Spirit-led actions and increased faith from sitting at Your feet and hearing Your word.

Let’s pray for our city and country

Dear Lord,

Our country’s spiritual life is hemorrhaging. Please stop the bleeding. Have mercy upon America again. We humble ourselves for the sins of our city and country. Forgive us we plea. Without Your blessing, we will surely continue our downward spiral. Awaken the church, the government, and the populace to our desperate need for our Creator.

Let’s pray for the global advance of the gospel

Dear Lord,

We thank you for the great advance of Your gospel throughout the world in 2010. We pray that You would prepare us and use us to make Your name famous. We pray especially for the Christians in America. Let the church be all that You intended, as we learn to walk in new levels of love, compassion, and boldness. Holy Spirit, we need Your touch on our lives and families. Fill us again to overflowing we pray, in Jesus’ name, amen.

Intentional for souls,
